National magazine selects Pietron’s THUNDERSTONE in its search for the best indie books of 2013
Scribe Publishing Company book Thunderstone by author Barbara Pietron has been named a finalist for the 2013 Book of the Year Awards by Foreword Reviews, the only review magazine solely dedicated to discovering new indie books, in the young adult fiction category. The book, aimed at a young adult (or “young adult at heart”) audience, tells the story of a teenage girl who must use her newfound spiritual ability to save a quiet lake town in Minnesota from a Native American mythological monster.
The book was published in November of 2013.
Before its release, Publisher’s Weekly called the book “…well-written and entertaining… Jeni makes for a likeable protagonist that readers will identify with.”
Each year, Foreword shines a light on a small group of indie authors and publishers whose groundbreaking work stands out from the crowd. Foreword’s awards are more than just a shiny sticker on the front of a book; they help connect the best indie books to readers eager to discover new stories written by previously unknown authors.
Pietron is a debut author who, in the wake of automotive downsizing, chose to pursue a literary career. Thunderstone was inspired by her personal interests and experiences.
“I’ve been fascinated with Native American culture and beliefs since I was a kid,” said Pietron. “After a trip to Lake Itasca, MN, I decided the unspoiled area was the perfect setting for a story steeped in Native American lore.”
Pietron will be selling and signing copies of Thunderstone at the Southfield Public Library on June 4th, at 7 p.m. The book is also available online or for order from bookstores.
This is the second time a book from the relatively new Scribe Publishing Company has placed as a finalist in Foreword’s Book of the Year awards. The first time was the company’s first book, Easter Ann Peters’ Operation Cool by Jody Lamb, which went on to win 2012 Book of the Year in juvenile fiction.
In the next two months, a panel of over 100 librarians and booksellers will determine the winners of these prestigious awards.
